It's A Grease Halloween: My Toddler’s Danny Zuko Halloween Costume
A little break from the usual… This one is just for fun (because we love the holidays)!
One of my favorite costumes as a girl was dressing up as a teen from the 50s, complete with poodle skirt, neck scarf, and black and white saddle oxfords. I used a can of hairspray (probably poisonous by today’s standards) to hold up a sideways ponytail of curled hair. Topped off with a letterman jacket, I felt like a classic American girl. My inspiration was usually the movie, Grease. But the one look I could never pull off was Sandy’s iconic black outfit and red shoes in the final scene. Personally, I like to wear pants I can walk in, especially since becoming a mom. But I digress.
This year was the first Halloween my son was old enough to celebrate. A few days before a big Halloween festival, I still didn’t have a costume for him. Some moms I know waited until the last-minute, too. Other mom friends were surprised, “What are you going to do?” I love our culture’s commitment to the holiday season - that is, as long as we maintain sight of why we celebrate and throw parties and each too much food. In this case, I thought, Maybe I’ll just stick him in that fluffy blue winter suit his grandma gave him and say he’s a blueberry.
But maybe there was something better. I started scouring his closet (and mine) for the right getup. My son has always had a serious side, so I thought a Boss Baby costume could be perfectly fitting. Alas, he didn’t own a single black suit (oops). Then, as my toddler carried clothes off into all corners of the house, I noticed the little black jacket.
My husband is better at shopping and dressing (really anything to do with styles) than me. Truth time: he has actually picked my outfits for years. Something about that skill set must be natural because when he was 11, he found this genuine black leather jacket for his one-year-old brother on sale at the GAP. Over 20 years later, that little jacket hangs in my toddler’s closet - and it hasn’t quite fit right until now. It’s like the jacket knew we’d need it exactly in October of 2019 so my son could dress up as Danny Zuko from Grease. (Too far?)
He already had tight-fitting jeans and a white onesie (actually, a million of them). I also found this baby taming cream that is safe and natural with good hold for toddler hair! The morning before the event, my husband found a pair of black and white converse-style shoes for $13. And that was the total cost of his costume. (Thank goodness.)
I also think little Danny Zuko was pretty comfortable. No ears, head pieces, glasses or other items for him to take off all night. Here’s to hoping next year is this easy!
